Enchant Your Ears Part 2 – My Fav Audio Book Picks (12/2019)

Are you an avid reader? Then you may find this list of audio books available via Audible.com to provide some additional fodder. As I’ve shared before, I spend a significant amount of time listening to audio books. It’s gotten so bad, on the drive to the grocery store, I’d rather listen to audio books than podcasts or the news (who wants to listen to Trump impeachment or how he’s done yet something else anyone else would get terminated for?).

Note: I’ve listened to a lot more stories than are shown here. These are my favorites of those. I didn’t mention lots of titles because, frankly, they weren’t all that wonderful. Or, they were “Meh.” Fortunately, Audible allowed me to return those. For example, Anthony Melchiorri’s The Tide left me…bored. I’m not sure why. Lots of other folks liked the zombie apocalypse tale, but after listening to LOTS of zombie apocalypse stories, The Tide series just didn’t grab me. Haha.

A Bit About My Old Favorites

Curious about audio books I’ve read before? I’m mostly into sci-fi, fantasy genres, and I guarantee you, you won’t go wrong checking out Part 1 of Enchant Your Ears. You can read Part 1 of Enchant Your Ears, but before I go any further, I have to say something.

Read Jonathan Moeller.

Jonathan Moeller is one of my top 5 favorite authors. Be sure to get The Frostborn series (LOTS of books), and the Cloak Games books. There are lots of others he’s written but these are my two favorites (although they are ALL great!).

I read a lot, so it’s quite difficult to get to the top 5 list. However, he’s written several amazing series that are worth listening to. I highly recommend you check out all his books, many of which are now available in audio book format. I can’t say I’ve bought any audio versions, since I’ve read the print version of everything he’s published. I may circle back and pick up the audio versions, but, well, I’m not ready yet.

Ok, ready to see some of my new picks? Here are a few of my new favorites.

Roman Legions Cast Adrift

Like some Roman legion action? There’s nothing as much fun as reading  about what would happen when a Roman legion is sent from Earth to another planet. Marc Alan Edelheit‘s multi-trilogy series are phenomenal, action-packed books that will have you learning about Roman army fighting tactics. Here is how I recommend you listen to them (the trilogies) in order…so each link below takes you to a trilogy or more of stories. AMAZING.

  1. The Karus Saga
  2. Tales of the Seventh
  3. Chronicles of an Imperial Legionary Officer
Although not about Roman legions, you may want to give The Paladin Trilogy a listen. It’s a bit different than the other books, but has knights and goddesses, etc. The storytelling is engaging, and the narrator is fun to listen to. When it ended (trilogy), I wrote Daniel M Ford and asked him “What the heck?” but that was that. So that should give you some idea of how invested I was in the main character. Gee, I hope that doesn’t give anything away.

Future Apocalypse with Faerie Magic

Wishing you had an engaging story that involves faeries and other stuff reshaping the modern world as we know it? I thought I wouldn’t like this series, but Nora Roberts is an incredible storyteller, and I was amazed at how well she weaves the tales.

  • Chronicles of the One: This is the series that has several books in it (three so far) and I have to say, it has been riveting. I have the third book in my queue and can’t wait to get started on it once I finish The Karus Saga.

Keep It Simple, Werewolf

Finding amazing werewolf stories that don’t involve romance a la Bitten can be difficult. As a result, I haven’t found many werewolf stories (you know, plain and simple werewolf tales that are brutal, bloody, and don’t have anything to do with teenagers) worth reading. Here are two series that don’t disappoint.
  • Keith C Blackmore’s Breeds. This is a series of books featuring werewolves, and every one of them had me at the edge of my seat, white-knuckled at the steering wheel. I highly recommend all the books in this trilogy. If you’re not familiar with Blackmore, you will also want to listen to his Mountain Man series (it’s about zombies, not an early West series).
  • T.W. Piperbrook’s Outage. Another werewolf series that has an interesting take on the werewolf genre and doesn’t disappoint. I have to admit, by the end of the Outage’s fifth book (another plus since there are FIVE books in this series), I was starting to get tired of werewolves. Just a little. But wow, what fun to read.
Want more werewolf? You might find Mark Tufo’s Lycan Fallout worth reading/listening to. I liked his zombie apocalypse series much better, but if you’re starting out, why not? There are five books in that series.

Humor at the End

Want to laugh your head off as you listen to the world end? Then, Dennis E. Taylor’s the Bobiverse is an amazing science fiction jaunt. I was so emotionally invested in the character (Bob), that the end of the series got me to shed a virtual tear (virtual, not literal, oh well, you’ll get the joke later).
Here’s a write-up from the Audible website and it’s right on target:

There’s a reason We Are Legion, We Are Bob was named Audible’s Best Science Fiction Book of 2016: its irresistibly irreverent wit! Bob Johansson has just sold his software company for a small fortune and is looking forward to a life of leisure. The first item on his to-do list: spending his newfound windfall. On an urge to splurge, he signs up to have his head cryogenically preserved in case of death. Then he gets himself killed crossing the street.

Waking up 117 years later, Bob discovers his mind has been uploaded into a sentient space probe with the ability to replicate itself. Bob and his clones are on a mission to find new homes for humanity and boldly go where no Bob has gone before.

Dennis E. Taylor’s hilarious novel sets the stage for the magnificent performance of Ray Porter, who revels in the brave new world of corpsicles, artificial intelligence, interstellar space probes, and space colonization in tantalizing detail.

I love the narration for this series…it’s the same guy throughout the entire series, which is incredible once you figure out he has to have subtle nuances to reflect multiple clones. Give it a listen, you won’t regret it!

A Few More INCREDIBLE, AWESOME TALES

Finally, if you haven’t yet gotten Craig Alanson’s Expeditionary Force series, narrated by R.C. Bray you need to! Skippy the Magnificent is waiting. It’s laugh out loud funny and scifi.

Oh, and of course, Nicholas Sandsbury Smith’s Hell Divers is not one to pass up! They dive so humanity survives. See? It is pretty dark apocalypse and powerful.

And, Joshua Gayou’s Commune series is well-worth the listen. Yes, it’s another apocalypse series ready by the incredible R.C. Bray. Another one is The Fear Saga (wow). One book to read that had an intriguing premise is Ice Fall.
