Last week, I had the opportunity to eat with an old friend/colleague at Thai Taste , one of my favorite places to eat Thai food in San Antonio, Texas. I love the #6 Sweet and Sour plate at level 6 spicy. It is so good, I try to visit at least once a year. I had managed to last visit in February, 2020, and felt comfortable enough going last week, a few days before the holiday. Sweet and Sour $8.95 - $13.95 Stir-fried with onions, bell peppers, pineapple, napa and tomatoes in sweet and sour sauce. Served with steamed rice. Sitting in an almost empty restaurant across from my immunocompromised friend, I wore my KN-95 with neck gaiter right up until the soup arrived. After consuming the soup, I covered up again, until the food arrived. We ate and spoke to each other, with some awareness of the risk we were taking. Fortunately, both of us are fully vaccinated and boosted, isolated, so felt comfortable, but who really knows? Did You Know? USPS has 4 free Covid tests they will ship to you.
You may recall that a short time ago, Prancer, our toy poodle, was mourned. He had lived a long life, 15 years, spanning the youth of my children and giving my wife and I comfort through much of our careers. Today, we brought home a new pup, a Heart of Texas SPCA puppy rescue. We've decided to name her "Chica," a name my 23 year old son suggested. There was a lot of back-n-forth, as we tried to find a name that would match her and fit our family, too. KSee some pics of Chica On 8/25/22, Chica was 3 months old. We couldn't take her home right away since SPCA expected her to be spayed on September 1, so here we are on September 2nd with this blog post. We are quite excited by her enthusiasm. Update: 9/7/2022 Unfortunately, Chica's enthusiasm proved to be too much for us. I knew puppies were a handful, but this terrier-chihuahua mix ended up being too much. She is adorable, learned to "sit" and walk on a leash (mostly), and she did potty train. But...s
I spent most of an hour or so going through the ancillary resources to a new book I'm reading, or listening to, Culturally Responsive Teaching for Multilingual Learners (2022). Here are my notes on the audio version of the book. Lots of great resources (a Google search will reveal them to you) come with the book. What I like about it is that it is almost 8 hours, so won't take forever to listen to. What's more, it focuses on multilingual learners, which is a nice break. MyNotes The illusion of inclusion: With a push for more multicultural books and resources, the field of education has evolved. Culture is often left out of the equation when improving equity for multilingual learners, even though they want to start with strengths and assets. With a workforce that is primarily white, monolingual, ML students lose out on affirmation of their culture. That's why this book matters. Be ready to listen, take risks, and sit with the discomfort that this may bring. The aut
