#Moodle 2.0 First Look - Reflections on Preface and Chapter 1
Note: This is part of a series of blog entries sharing my take-aways from Moodle 2.0 First Look by Mary "moodlefairy" Cooch, published by Packt Publishing.
Of everything written in the wonderfully brief Preface, this part jumped out at me right away...probably because this is one of the areas I'm dreading having to deal with:
...assists you in upgrading your site to Moodle 2.0, and will give you the confidence to make the move up to Moodle 2.0, either as an administrator or a course teacher.
The challenge of upgrading an existing server get me worried--we're using a Mac server I didn't setup, I have no worries about Windows or GNU/Linux server but that's not what I have--as does the idea that I have thousands of courses to ensure are still working. So, I'm looking for a book that's going to hold my hand as I make the transition.
In Chapter 1, some of the main take-aways that got me excited right out of the starting gate include the following:
- It's now possible to rename the topic sections so that names appear in links rather than numbered topics!
- Easy to add a file from the ADD A RESOURCE drop down
- "Display a Directory" has been replaced with friendlier language, "Folder"
- Easy embedding of media, including YouTube
- Complete re-write of the Workshop model is intriguing...I like the different stages broken out for view
- Activity locking is now standard, addressing the question "how can we set our course so a learner can only progress to level 2 once they have reached a certain grade in Level1? How can we hide the Advanced work so they can't see it until they have completed the Basic work?"
- Learning paths in Moodle?!? Wow, this is awesome!
- Looking forward to reading about how to upgrade from Moodle 1.9 to Moodle 2.0. Makes me think that this is possible!
Based on Chapter 1 reading of Moodle 2.0 First Look, it appears that there is hope for transitioning a Moodle 1.9 installation to Moodle 2.0 on the same server provided the MySQL/PHP requirements are met. That's do-able.
