Act of Teaching - Intro Summary Sentences

As I shared, I'm participating in ABYDOS training. One of the exercises for Day 1 involves summarizing the Introduction in single sentences per each section. Below is my summary....


Day 1 Assignment - “10 Summary Sentences” for the Introduction to ACTS OF TEACHING

  1. A Bit of Background:
    Writing is a process that is interactive, requires creativity and innovation in an increasingly technology enhanced workplace of the present and future.
  2. Historical Perspective:
    Lock-step curriculums, like the factory model approach to schooling of the past, fail to align approaches that have proven themselves--such as research validated approaches--to improve student test scores.
  3. The Global Age:
    Changing expectations--driven by globalization--have resulted in a shift requiring significant reform in education.
  4. Students in the Global Age:
    Communication technologies appear to make obsolete more traditional approaches of group work and interaction...it is not that these older approaches are invalid, only that they are insufficient to the needs of students in the Global Age.
  5. Challenges in the Global Age:
    Paradigm shifts threaten the status quo that once was composed of new ideas, embodying a lesson of becoming too inflexible, attached to past approaches that have lost their relevancy.
  6. Shifts in the Global Age:
    New literacy expectations overshadow requisite skills of yesterday’s classroom--reading, writing--and require students to read quickly, predict accurately, and infer thoughtfully from a variety of media, not just printed text, as well as create and collaborate at a distance.
  7. Skills for the Digital Age:
    Creativity and emotional intelligence are requisite skills in a world flattened by technology.
  8. Simultaneous Literacy:
    Academic multitasking--distinguished by the merging of listening, speaking, reading, writing, computing, collaboration, presentation skills and oral communication--involve multiple layers of competence and flexibility of application, synthesis, evaluation and creativity.
  9. Future Trends:
    Future trends describe how the use of technology to transform how we have done things in the past--such as storytelling becoming digital/multimedia storytelling--is radically transforming concepts long held dear.
  10. Conclusion:
    Writing is a complexity of cognitive processes embedded in a social context that involves amplifying student voices as they solve problems together, locally or across the globe.
